It can be difficult to master, but improving your breathing technique will make a huge difference in your swimming. In contrast to other endurance sports like running and biking, swimmers have to have control over their breath and coordinate it with their movement through the water.
Breathing in coordination with your swimming will allow you to maintain a consistent rhythm while you swim, minimize your drag while breathing, and actually increase the speed of your stroke. What's more, learning to breathe properly will be a game changer if you are a swimmer who experiences breathlessness and anxiety in the water around your breathing.
Check out our posts below for more detailed tips on what to do, and what NOT to do, in order to improve your technique which will lead to faster swimming.

💡COACH TIPS Breathing Dos and Don’ts - Roll your body
Improving your breathing technique makes a massive difference in your swimming performance. By moving your head up and down while you breathe, you end up creating more drag and using more energy leading to slower, fatigued swimming.
Don’t fear - we’ve got you covered. Simplify your breathing by following these simple steps -
🏊 Keep your head in sync with your shoulders to breathe. This keeps your breath more in sync with your stroke and will minimize any unnecessary head movement used to take a breath.
🏊 Imagine your body is connected on a skewer. As you turn the skewer, your head will turn to the side with your shoulders to take your breath.
By keeping your breath that simple, you’ll decrease the drag you create and keep your breath in time with your stroke, resulting in easer, faster swimming 🚀

💡COACH TIPS Breathing Dos and Don’ts - Turn your head to breathe
We all know it’s completely necessary to turn your head to breathe when swimming. What is often missed, is ensuring you minimize how much your head moves while you’re breathing. This minimizes drag and maintains the rhythm of your stroke - a win-win!
For many swimmers, it’s easy to turn a little too much, resulting in your whole face coming out of the water. Going this far to breathe isn’t necessary and affects your stroke rhythm. Next time you hit the pool, think about this simple cue -
🏊 Try to keep one goggle in the water, and one out of the water while you breathe. This is a great visual cue that will help you to turn your head just enough to take a full breath, without any unnecessary movement when you turn.
Simple changes can often make all the difference to your overall stroke - give it a go! 🏆

💡COACH TIPS Breathing Dos and Don’ts - Look to the side to breathe
Keeping a good posture when you swim can make all the difference to your swim performance, especially when it comes to breathing. Doing so ensures that you maintain good body alignment and less drag, allowing you to glide through the water (every swimmer’s dream!)
See below a couple of points to remember next time you head to the pool -
🏊 If you are looking backwards, or forwards, during your breath, you are no longer holding your posture, creating unnecessary drag and slowing down your pace.
🏊 If you focus on looking towards the side of the pool, instead of the end, behind or ahead of you, your head will stay in line with your body to maintain good posture during your breath. This automatically limits any unnecessary movement.
Limiting unnecessary movement = more streamlined swims 🎉

💡COACH TIPS Breathing Dos and Don’ts - Keep rhythm through breathing
When trying to maintain a consistent swimming rhythm, getting the perfect ‘breath’ can be tricky.
Often, when you breathe, your whole body stops in the water to take a breath, before continuing to swim after your face returns to the water. Frequently this is the result of holding your breath while you are swimming and trying to breathe out AND in when your head is turned to breathe. It’s tough!
We’re here to help -
🏊 Next time you hit the pool, think about blowing bubbles into the water while you’re swimming so that when you turn your head to breathe, a sharp, short inhale is all that is needed. This saves time, ensures you get your full breath, and maintains your stroke rhythm 🫧
